Day 12 of The Big Adventure, according to Sarah.
Day 12 was another late lie in. We’d had a look at things to do on Koh Samui and it was all basically twice the price of the other islands and not so nice. So we decided to have a few chill out days.
We headed upstairs for breakfast; Lauren ordered what turned out to be the most questionable eggs benedict known to mankind, the most limited fresh fruit platter and of course the mandatory tea and I had two boiled eggs and toast.
Her eggs benedict consisted of two over cooked poached eggs and a slice of toast drizzled in, what looked like, curry sauce. Clearly eggs benedict doesn’t translate to Thai.
The fresh fruit platter was: unripe pineapple.
So really all they got right was the tea.
But my boiled eggs and toast (can’t really go wrong with that) were done to perfection. So it wasn’t all bad.
After the questionable breakfast, we headed off to the beach. Now actually getting to the beach proved to be a bit of a mission, because all the hotel resorts line the beachfront, it’s actually quite hard to get through. So we ended up just walking through a hotel lobby like we owned the place and hoped no one questioned us. Worked a treat.
We wandered along the beach for about a hundred meters when we saw a sign to pool, wifi, cocktails and massage. SOLD. So we plonked ourselves down on some beaut sun loungers and ordered two sprites.
It wasn’t long before we got too hot and decided a dip in the pool was the only thing for it…

We stayed here snoozing (closed mouth variety) in the sun pretty much all afternoon.
When the sun started to go in, we decided to go for a little walk along the beach and then head back to cheeky monkey’s. Just as we were walking down a little side alley to get to the main road, a gaggle of oiks on scooters decided to strike up a conversation with us, while they were still scooting and we were still walking. It went a little something like this:
Oik 1: Aaiight babes, how’s it going?
Us: Hi
Oik 2: So how long have you ladiez been here?
Us: oh, just a couple of days
Oik 3: So what’s good to do around here?
Us: ermm… we don’t really know
At this point I think the oiks finally got the message and scooted off thank god. Drive-by hit ons were clearly an accepted practice here. Luckily we escaped unscathed.
Back at the hostel someone had slipped a flyer under our door reminding us of free buffet food up on the roof. Lauren and I, not the types to turned down free food, headed up without a seconds hesitation.
The buffet food basically consisted of rice, a chicken curry of sorts, some white slice bread with what looked like breadcrumbs on top, a platter of peeled cucumber slices, a pasta salad and an array of condiments.
We dived right in; Lauren, being the more adventurous one, tried a little bit of everything. I, on the other hand, just had some rice with some of the sauce from the curry.
Doug, the bar manager/lead singer of the cheeky monky’s, came over to say hello. He took one look at Laurens plate, plucked the breadcrumbed peice of bread off Laurens plate and said ‘Oh you don’t wanna eat that – that’s just there to soak up the fat from the chicken nuggets’. Lauren had thought she was getting to sample a local delicassy – clearly not. And now Doug the creepy bar manager/singer clearly thought we were weirdos.
After a cheeky cocktail and a birthday Skype with Franki, we decided to head further afield. We had heard rumours of a bar called Ark bar with fire dancers and a good atmosphere so we thought we’d try and find it. It was a good half an hour walk along the beach in the dark before we got there, but it was worth the trek. Deck chairs were laid out on the beach in front of an area of fire dancers all twirling balls of fire. We went to the bar and ordered a couple of daquiris and went to set up camp on some deck chairs.

We managed to nab ourselves some front row seats and sat back to enjoy the fire dancing.

A man was wandering around with a giant lizard (an iguana perhaps?) and Lauren was first to volunteer to hold the beast.

After all the excitement, we wandered home (via maccas for a cheeky snack) and went to bed.
