Snatch

Day 57 of The Big Adventure, according to Sarah/ Parker.
I awoke to hear Lauren pottering around, doing final preparations for her big flight back to Sydney.

Her taxi came to pick her up and take her to the airport at 9.30am.

Freya was still asleep so they had a sleepy hug and me and Parker helped her downstairs with her bags.

We had a big hug goodbye and were very very sad to see her go. I’d spent the last 2 months with her, and we had barely spent any time apart. I knew I was going to miss her dreadfully 😦 we used to know exactly what each other was thinking.
Parker taking over blogging now…
Freya and Sarz were sleepy so I decided to go to the beach for an hour solo as it was just a short cycle down the road which we’d done a few times before and I didn’t want to just lie in the room with them for the morning before our bus to Hue.
On the way I got out some money as I knew I’d want to get a delicious drink at the beach and I had nothing at all! I had such a relaxing hour on the beach reading my book which I’d just gotten into and it wasn’t too hot, perf. I also had a delicious watermelon shake. Loving life.
It got to the point where I had to leave to make sure I had enough time to pack and check out for the bus so I headed back on my bike. This is when my day went drastically downhill.
I was merrily cycling along and some arsehole on a motorbike sped past me snatching my bag as he went. I didn’t know what to do other than should “YOU DICK” which obviously, being Vietnamese I’m sure he didn’t understand. I felt so helpless but just had to finish my cycle home (only about 2 mins). I felt like such a stupid little white girl. Yes in hindsight I could have warn my bumbag instead of a beach bag etc etc but there were loads of people around, I was on a busy road, my bag was covered by my towel so I still felt like I had gotten very unlucky.
When I get back to the hostel (with an hour to go before we needed to leave for the bus and still yet to pack) I frantically started trying to sort things out … Cancelling my cards, asking my parents to help out (although it was like 4 am at home so had to wait for them to wake up). Sarah then said I needed to go to the police if I wanted to make a claim on my insurance. At this point be absolute babe at the hotel said her dad could take me to the police. So I tentatively hopped on his moped and off he went. It transpired he spoke no English at all so at the “police station” (I am sceptical this was a real police station, no uniforms and VERY informal), once again feeling like a stupid little white girl, they discussed the situation occasionally pointing and looking at me. A man on a moped then turned up who the hotel babe (HB here on in) had sent to translate. He explained I needed To go to a different police station as where many bag was stolen was a different province… We then sat waiting for ages… I asked what we were waiting for (politely of course!) and he translator said the HB was coming to take me. A lady then turned up who I assumed must be her, you couldn’t tell as she was completely covered except for her eyes, ushered me on to her glam red moped and off we went. At the next police station it turned out my bag contents was worth too much to report there so we had to go to a bigger police station… What a disaster!
We filled out the form, with me doing it in English and the HB copying it out in Vietnamese for me. Top Hun as you’re not allowed at the police without an interpreter apparently.
We finally finished this police stuff by 12.45. I was very worried we would miss the bus to Hue as this was at 1.15 and I hadn’t spoken to the girls since 10.30 when I left for the police circuit.
I got back and being babes they had packed up my bags and paid and were ready to go and had even bought me THE BEST SANDWICH IN HOI AN and maybe even V Nam. I don’t know what I’d have done without them.
We made it on the bus (along with some EXCEEDINGLY loud Asians shouting across us making it impossible to sleep – well, obviously Freya could) and got to Hue around 5.
When we arrived at our hotel the staff gave us the BEST greeting. Quote from Freya B, “I don’t think anyone has ever been that pleased to see me”. They gave us fruit and delicious fruit shakes and were just amazing. They made my disastrous day infinitely better.
We were ravved and tired so went for dinner. We really fancied normal western for so went to an Italian, when in Rome…
The food was amazing and exactly what we needed! Freya even got a free glass of wine which did not slip down a treat for her.
We were back in the hotel by 8 and had an enjoyably relaxing evening watching Asia’s Next Top Model – new fave show.
Sarah went out on a sweet treat run, classic, and Freya ate a mountain of Pringles. I think we all passed out pretty early on and had a delightful nights sleep. We treated Sarah to the double bed to herself.
