‘Suncream is not my friend’

Day 53 of The Big Adventure, according to Sarah.
We woke up feeling far better than the previous morning. Although Freya was a little uncomfortable as she had missed some patches of skin when applying her suncream and now had some areas of very painful burn.

With not much else to do in Nha Trang, we headed back to the beach.

Lauren and I found a nice cafe for breakfast, while the other two got in some more tanning.

I had some of the most delicious banana crepes with condensed milk (a new obsession of mine) and Lauren had a tea. We sat and people watched for a while and were quite amazed at how Russians had a certain ‘look’ that meant they were quite easy to pick out. That certain ‘look’ could basically be described as a cross between ‘tacky glamorous’ and ‘that’s so 90s’.

After our full of people watching, we headed back to find the girls on the beach and topped up our tans.

After an hour or two, a rather large ominous cloud came over and we decided there was no point in beaching if the sun wasn’t even out.

We had booked to get the night bus to Hoi An that departed at 7pm that evening and so decided to go for a late lunch to try and see us through.

We remembered that lanterns definitely had grilled fish on the menu and so headed there so that the girls could finally have their ‘little fishy on a little dishy’.

The fish came out wrapped in aluminium foil and presented on a banana leaf. Upon unfolding the foil, it was clear that the fish had ALL of the seasoning. A whole onion, chilli peppers, spring onions, the works.

The girls happily tucked in while I had a vegetable clay pot (a traditional Vietnamese way of cooking) which tasted suspiciously like Chinese sweet and sour sauce and Lauren had a salad.

We all ate until we were stuffed and then rushed back to the hotel to pack up our things and head to the bus station.

I headed straight up to the room as I was desperate for the toilet and left my purse with the girls downstairs to pay.

They came up all looking rather angry and apparently the staff had made the bill very complicated (something to do with all the crisps) and had not been very friendly.

We finished off packing our bags and rushed off to find the bus stop.

200m down the road the receptionist came zooming after us on a scooter demanding more money – apparently we hadn’t paid for a bottle of water. We handed over the cash and continued on to the bus stop.

We had been told to be there by 6.30 for our night bus. We arrived bang on time but classic Asian timing we didn’t end up leaving until over an hour later.

It was one of those enjoyable sleeper bus where everyone got their own almost fully reclining chair.

After a while quite a few of us needed the toilet so when the bus stopped we eagerly jumped off to find… A bush.

Freya B being the Maverick that she is went right for it but Parker and I decided to hold on until the next stop.

We just about managed to hold on ok to find that the ‘toilets’ at the next stop were nothing more than holes in the ground and the bush probably would have been better. Oh well.

Back on the bus we hopped and sped towards Hoi An.
